How ReLove Gives Furniture a Second Life

Good furniture can be rehomed instead of going to landfill, giving it a second life with someone who needs it. Through Crackers Clearout's partnership with ReLove, quality pieces cleared from Sydney homes are matched with individuals and families who can't afford to furnish a home from new.
The problem with 'perfectly good' furniture
Every clearance job is different, but there's one thing that comes up again and again: furniture that's in perfectly good condition — a solid dining table, a barely-used lounge suite, a bedroom set that's simply too large for the next home — that would otherwise end up in landfill because there's no obvious way to pass it on.
Arranging private sales or Facebook Marketplace listings takes time most families in the middle of a clearance simply don't have. And hard rubbish collection is unpredictable and wasteful. There's a better way.

ReLove
ReLove is a Sydney-based social enterprise that collects, refurbishes where needed, and redistributes furniture and household goods to people experiencing hardship — individuals leaving domestic violence situations, people transitioning out of homelessness, families setting up a new home after crisis.
For many of the people ReLove serves, a donated lounge suite or a set of bedroom furniture isn't a nice-to-have. It's what makes a house feel liveable. It's what a child sits on to do homework, or what a parent comes home to after a hard day.
How the partnership works
When Crackers Clearout identifies quality furniture during a clearance, eligible pieces are diverted to ReLove rather than going to disposal. We deliver items to ReLove regularly. ReLove assesses and prepares them, then distributes them through their network of social service partners.
For our clients, this means the things they've looked after — the furniture that's been part of a home for years — get to be part of someone else's home next. That matters to people. We hear it regularly.
What qualifies for donation?
Not every piece of furniture is suitable for ReLove's program. Items need to be in excellent condition — structurally sound, clean, and free from significant damage. Upholstered furniture must meet fire safety standards. Items with significant wear, pest damage, or hygiene concerns aren't suitable for redistribution.
Our team assesses items on the day and makes the call. If something doesn't meet the standard for donation, we'll look at other recycling or disposal options. Items suitable for a second life don’t get sent to landfill unnecessarily.
Beyond furniture: what else gets rehomed
ReLove focuses on furniture and larger household items, but there's a broader network of donation partners that covers clothing, kitchenware, books, linen, and smaller household goods. Crackers Clearout works across this network to keep as much out of landfill as possible.
For the families doing the clearing
One of the things that makes a deceased estate or a downsizing clearance emotionally harder than it needs to be is the feeling that things you've cared for are just going to a tip. Knowing that a parent's lounge suite is going to a young family starting over, or that a grandmother's linen is going to a refuge that needs it — can change how you feel.
It's a small thing in the context of everything a clearance involves. But it's a real one.
