Do you donate and recycle? It's a question worth asking

When you hire a clearance company, you're trusting them with a lot — not just the contents of your home, but the decision about what happens to those contents afterwards. It's a reasonable question to ask: where does it all actually go?

Step one: sorting on the day

When our team arrives at a property, items are assessed as they go in the truck. Furniture, clothing, kitchenware, books, linen — items in good condition are set aside for donation whilst things that are broken or beyond use are sent to the relevant recycling or waste stream.

This sorting process takes more time than simply loading everything onto one truck and driving to a tip. We think it's worth it.

Donate — giving things a second life

Good furniture and household items are donated to charity partners and social enterprises operating across the Greater Sydney area. These organisations — including community op-shops, domestic violence support groups, and other charitable organisations — genuinely need these items and redistribute them to people who can use them.

Knowing that the contents of your home are going somewhere useful matters to a lot of our clients, particularly those clearing a family member's estate or a home that's been loved for many years.

Recycle — what can and can't be processed

A significant proportion of what gets cleared can be recycled rather than sent to landfill. Cardboard, paper, glass, metals, and many plastics all have separate processing streams. Timber and green waste have their own pathways too.

E-waste — old computers, televisions, printers, and other electronics — requires specific handling under NSW regulations. Crackers Clearout ensures e-waste is processed through approved channels rather than going into general waste.

What can't be recycled or donated goes to Sydney's best and most ethical waste transfer stations, where items are sorted for recycling and appropriate disposal. We aim to donate and recycle as much as possible on every job.

Why this matters

Sydney produces a significant amount of hard rubbish every year, and a large proportion of it arrives at transfer stations in clearance trucks. At Crackers Clearout, we pride ourselves on ethical and responsible disposal every job.

What you can do before we arrive

We're very happy to have a chat before your clearance to give you an idea of what sort of items charities accept. Please ensure you speak directly to the charity before dropping items on their doorstep — not every item is desirable for donation and charities are having to allocate funding and resources to offloading unwanted donations.

We work closely with a number of charities and for larger jobs can facilitate the movement of items to our partner organisations.
